Recreating a music video: results

What we found when recreating Adele's Hello music video was that shots are extremely short a lot shorter, typically ranging from 2 to 7 seconds. We also learned the importance lip syncing and performance. We had to learn the lyrics to the song to be able to convincingly look like we are singing the song as well as acting to look as if the lyrics were our reality. This meant looking sad or angry when we needed to depending on particular lyrics.

Recreating a music video

In preparation for our project to create an original music video, we recreated the Adele - Hello music video as it holds all the conventional features of a music video in that genre including lip syncing and montage style quick pace cutting.

We made a storyboard to help us when filming where we found that most shot are extremely short from about 2-6seconds.

The History of Music Videos

Before the 1960's, music videos did not exist in the creative form we know today. They were usually recorded live performances of the artist singing the song as opposed to creating a separate project.

Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, released in 1965 is notably the first music video that resembles what we know as  music videos today. It shows Dylan standing in an alley shuffling through cue cards showing the lyrics of his song which today would actually be referred to as a lyric video as opposed to a music video.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is one of the first conventional music videos to be released. It came out in 1975 and contained a variety of shots, settings and performances. Not soon after in 1981 MTV was born which is a channel dedicated to music videos and the first video to be aired was ironically the song Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles.

The development of technical codes have been a major part in defining what makes a music video today with a music video now being a huge part of the marketing process for a single or album. High quality colour videos are typical features in music videos. Visuals being sequenced in a fast cut montage type style is the most common form of editing in music videos to guarantee multiple viewing as it is unlikely a consumer will see every single shot in the first viewing
